We in NEW ZEALAND are very lucky to have ACC as this wing of government provides monetary compensations for medical treatments as a result of accidents and has included dental injuries related to sports, accidents, medical misadventures etc.
ACC provides comprehensive, no-fault injury cover for all New Zealand residents and visitors to New Zealand.
For any dental injury that is the result of an accident at home or work, during sports, a dental claim can be registered through a dentist. It is important to seek treatment as soon as possible. Often for an accident after hours, you would go to the hospital where the dentist on-call would provide the emergency treatment. For any definite treatment and aftercare, you would be referred to a private dentist.
We will book you for an initial consultation with our dentist who will do a thorough examination of your injury, take any X-rays or photos required for lodging your ACC claim. We will have you fill out an ACC form describing the accident that led to the injury and the dentist will complete the form. ACC will then assess the claim and provide funding for treatment if approved.
Unfortunately, ACC does not always pay out for the full cost of treatment, although this is mostly related to larger ACC claims for more involved long term treatment options such as crowns, bridges, and implants. It also applies in the case where you have pre-existing dental conditions for example a large filling on the tooth (which broke during an accident or fall) or if you have had pre-existing gum disease. Due to these conditions, ACC may not cover the full cost of the treatment.
For emergencies in most cases, the initial treatment will be fully or mostly covered. Our team will be able to give you an idea of any extra cost, or co-payment at the time of consultation.
